Philosophy

At Tokyo fitness we believe that health and fitness is not something that should just be confined to a gym or sports field. Tokyo Fitness is far more focussed on helping people lead their lives to the fullest. By allowing clients to be physically and mentally prepared for the many personal and professional challenges they face on a daily basis, they will also be ready to seize life’s opportunities whenever they are presented.

The Tokyo Fitness training philosophy focuses on a 4-step approach to health and fitness that aims to initially ascertain the goals of the client and then calculate the time and training required to achieve those goals. This is done before beginning a highly athletic training regime. The 4 steps in this process are:

  • Step 1: Discovering what the client really wants
    • This is the singularly most important step to achieving superior fitness results. It involves setting clear goals and establishing what really matters to the client. These goals can either be based on a desired physical change (such as reducing body fat by a certain percentage) or involve preparing for an upcoming event such as a charity run, a marathon or a triathlon. What is important is that these goals should be both measurable and realistic.

  • Step 2: Determining what the client needs
    • Once the client’s goals have been established, a complete physical assessment is required to determine postural condition, current body movement patterns and joint range of motion, core strength, cardiovascular fitness and body composition. An additional nutritional assessment determines the client’s eating habits and their body’s reaction to the food they eat. The assessment provides the trainer with a clear understanding of the client’s current condition as well as their limitations in terms of flexibility, strength and endurance. This ensures that the individualized training plan devised to achieve the client’s goals does not result in needless injury by pushing too hard too soon.

  • Step 3: Restoring the body with corrective exercise and nutrition
    • Correct posture and muscle balance must be restored before beginning any intensive exercise programme. Ideal posture is the position in which the musculoskeletal system performs most effectively. Ultimate health and human performance can only be achieved upon the foundation of correct posture. Movements beginning and ending in poor posture foster muscle imbalance, which can cause poor performance, injury and aesthetic distortions. Tokyo Fitness trainers use corrective stretches, core stability exercises and remedial massage to restore ideal posture and provide a stable foundation for more intense athletic training. In terms of nutrition, clients begin the dietary restoration through the gradual reduction or elimination of certain types of unhealthy or processed foods that can cause gastrointestinal inflammation. The digestive organs are linked to key core stabilizing muscles, which can become inhibited as a result of poor diet. Inflammation can also make stomach muscles unresponsive to exercise, which can limit the effects of even the most intensive abdominal workout.

  • Step 4: An athletic approach to training
    • As mentioned previously, our training philosophy is based on the principal that everyone is an athlete. The complex movements in any sport can be deconstructed into the same essential movements that we use in everyday life. These are Pulling, Pushing, Squatting, Bending, Twisting, Lunging and Gait (running or walking). To achieve ultimate human performance these movements need to be perfected. The twisting movements required to train a tennis play to his a perfect forehand or allow a parent to place a sleeping child into a cot are remarkably similar. The type of functional resistance training used by Tokyo Fitness allows clients to coordinate and efficiently perform these essential movements. Perfecting these movement patterns improves performance and transforms the body by building lean muscle and burning an abundance of calories. Muscle has the highest metabolic rate of all human tissue and the physique of any top-level sprinter, for example, illustrates what can be achieved through an exercise programme based on high intensity training.
